Description
A striking and unusual late Victorian English games box made from Mahogany with military or campaign style brass inlay; these box are usually plain, this one being a little more special than the rest.
The lid lifts to reveal the folded leather games board in the interior of the lid, in very good condition being well over 100 years old with some wear commensurate with age; the folds strengthened with linen tape.
The hinged doors to the front swing open to reveal the full boxwood and ebony chess set, the black and white Rook together with the white Knight stamped with the red crown Staunton mark. Each chess piece sits on a brass pin to keep in place,
Behind this is a removable tray with draughts / checkers / backgammon counters in turned Ebony and Boxwood, a cribbage board, some small Di and a full set of bone and Ebony dominoes. this lifts to reveal four sets of playing cards (modern) and this tray in turn lifts to reveal six metal horse and jockey figures for the Ascot game, conical figures for another game, various counters etc.
A splendid box in excellent antique condition dating to the late Victorian era, around 1890/1900 and complete with a working key. 13" x 9" x 7" tall.
