Description
A handsome Antique English desk blotter, made the top made from highly decorative Boulle.
The tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.
The handle to the top unscrews to allow the blotting paper to be changed.
Dating to the late Victorian era, c.1880. Excellent condition measuring 5 1/4" x 3 1/4 x 3" tall.
