Description

A magnificent and most unusual breakfast dish, an example I have never come across before. Apart than being made by the creme de la creme of English silver plate makers, Elkington and Co., this one stand out due to it's mechanical action. When the lid is opened, it stops at 90 degrees, so it can sit, closed, half open or fully open at 180 degrees. Once the lid is at 90 degrees, the only way of pushing the lid right back is by lifting the two side handles together which releases the lid and it opens completely.
The dish stands on the grandest four foliate decorated legs and the lid is beautifully engraved with various decoration. The top of the lid is engraved with the original family armorial crest I believe for the Scottish Crawford Crawford of Auchnames and Kerse with a Stags Head Erased And Between The Antlers A Cross Crosslet Fitchee surrounded by the motto, God shaw the right.
As it is made by Elkington, we are able to date it accurately, the letter O being for the year 1875, a true mid-Victorian example in superb condition.
Excellent condition spanning 12 1/2" max x 9 3/4" including knob x 9" tall.
