Description
A very good example of a Victorian letter rack or holder, a good size too, making it a very useful and usable piece today.
Made from a variety of woven brass mesh and decorative cast brass panels to the front. The cast foliate panels are signed by the well renowned Birmingham foundry of William Tonk & Sons (WT & S) together with the stylized sun symbol.
Also incorporated onto the back of these panels is the English design registration number which allows us to date the piece reasonably accurately, this number corresponding to the year 1885.
The front has two brass plaques reading "Letters To Be Posted", quite unusual.
The top at the rear has a thick brass wire scroll, the two loops intended to usd for wall hanging if desired; it also looks quite splendid on the desk-top.
Excellent condition with an overall measurement of 9 1/2" wide x 3 1/2" x 7 1/4" to tallest point. The internal dimensions measuring 8 5/8" x 2 7/8".
