Description
A most handsome Victorian cast brass postal or letter scale, the right-hand pan engraved with the postal rates of the late 19th Century.The base is highly attractive with the three feet being figural in the form of mythical face and the panels under the pans are reticulated or pierced. The scale comes with a stunning stack of solid brass weights, the bottom one shaped to neatly fit into the base, the others stack on top to form a "Beehive".
The underside is signed by the maker Townsend & Co. (of Birmingham, England); this piece is lucky enough to have an English design registration number on the base for the year 1888.
Excellent condition measuring 7 1/2" x 6 3/4" x 3 1/4" high.
