Description

A very handsome Victorian writing box, in Mahogany with decorative fan inlay to the front and lid. Each side is mounted with two large cast brass ring handles.
The box comes complete with a working key and once opened, the beautiful fitted interior is revealed. There is a plethora of compartments with Mahogany dividers with two drawers underneath with polished brass handles.
Below this is the section with two original brass topped inkwells and a removable pen tray. When the box is closed up, this section tucks inside the box, it is sprung and appears again when the box is opened.
The fall front opens to reveal the writing slope, with the original leather writing surface with gold line embossing. The top section opens to reveal a section below to store papers or letters. The underside of the flap has an inlaid makers plaque, signed by the retailer "Chapman Son. & Co., Makers London E.C."
The last compartment retains the original leather clad desk blotter, and the front retains the two original books, " Addresses " and " Visits " hardly used and with only a couple of entries. Between these two books are some professionally reproduced calendar cards, ready for current use.
What makes this rather special is that it comes with the original Wedding Gift letter signed 1897.
A fine example in excellent condition, measuring 14 3/4" x 8 1/4" x 10 3/4" tall.
