early antique whale bone and bone wig scratcher back scratcher c1780

Description

These are usually found in very poor condition, so I was delighted to find this one in very good shape.
The long flexible column is made from Whale Bone with the hand carved from Bone with what looks to have a little slither of the little finger, mentioned purely for accuracy.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, courtiers in Europe who wore powdered wigs and elaborate costumes apparently resorted to decorative back scratchers to reach their itches in as subtle and dignified a manner as was possible given the circumstances.
Very good condition, measuring 18" in length.
