Description
A really fabulous find, these brass student's lamps are usually a very basic affair, this one quite special with the original glass shade and brass topper (which I have never seen on one of these before).
A perfect addition to any antique desk-top, the lamp was made by Sherwood's of Birmingham. The glass shade is signed "Sherwood's Birmingham - Made in Belgium" - it is the glass shade that was made in Belgium for Sherwood's and paired with the English produced lamp, made in Birmingham.
Sherwoods Ltd., manufacturers of oil lamps and burners in Birmingham. In 1904 they were trading as Isaac Sherwood & Son Ltd., at 44-50 Granville Street, Birmingham but by 1920 they had taken over Linley & Co. of 73-75 Great Lister Street, makers of `American' pattern lamps to become Sherwood-Linley. Nechells Park Works, Eliot Street, Nechells then moved to 44-50, Granville St., all in Birmingham.
The lamp is operated with a candle, which is inserted on the underside, it is sprung and as the candle burns the spring keeps the candle pushed upwards keeping the flame burning until the candle is extinct.
A fabulous example in undamaged condition. The base diameter measuring 5" and standing 16" tall.
