Description

A wonderfully decorative Victorian Walnut writing box, made around 1860.
Created from Walnut, what makes this one stand out is the highly decorative three dimensional Greek Key Tunbridge style inlay, quite exquisite.
The top has a diamond shaped Mother of Pearl plaque, again surrounding by a fine geometric inlaid mosaic border, complimenting a similar escutcheon to the front which houses a working taselled key.
The interior reveals a gold embossed leather writing surface, which has been replaced to give another 150 years of use, there is a lidded pen compartment and brass topped inkwell. There are sections to the top and bottom to store stationery, papers, and letters, these compartments have been lined in a painted effect veneer to resemble very fancy burr.
Excellent condition, measuring 12" x 8 1/2" x 5".
