Description

A wonderful Rosewood games box with an amazing (almost pristine) Bezique set inside. Bezique originated in France in the early 19th century as B駸igue. It was extremely fashionable in the early 20th century, and was Winston Churchill's favourite card game.
Bezique is a two-player card game, and the basic version is played with a double pack of 64 cards (two copies of A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7 in each suit), the two sets in this box are complete Bezique decks, nice and early by Goodhall and clearly original to the box.
The four gold embossed leather Bezique markers or registers are also pristine, almost untouched, each bearing the highly sought-after British design registration lozenge, which I have dated to April 1869, again by Goodhall, London.
The box made from exotic and expensive Rosewood is trimmed with brass edging, inlaid with brass stringing inlay and the lid has a highly decorative brass inlay with tiny Mother of Pearl flowers.
Excellent condition, measuring 8 3/4" x 6 1/4" x 2". Complete with working key.
